What is the 2019 BMW M2 Competition?

If you haven't heard, BMW will be discontinuing the performance-tuned M2 sports coupe after the 2018 MY has made its run. But, that doesn't mean that the market will be missing its smallest, sportiest two-door for long.

While the M2 Coupe will bow out, it will be soon replaced by the all-new 2019 BMW M2 Competition.

What is the Competition trim, and what's the difference from the previous M2 generation? We take a look.

More Power

The new 2019 BMW M2 Competition does equip a similarly-sized engine to the classic M2, but they are not the same beast.

The Competition's new 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder engine actually comes from the M3 and M4 lines, and is tuned down just slightly to 405 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque to better serve the lighter weight of this fresh new coupe.

The 2019 BMW M2 Competition will feature carbon-fiber components in about as many places as BMW can fit them, to keep weight down as low as possible. More power means that the new M2 Competition will also come with larger M Sport brakes to handle that deceleration.

One thing that doesn't change, though, is that the 2019 BMW M2 Competition will still offer a six-speed manual transmission as standard, like the previous M2 Coupe does, with an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as an available upgrade.

A top speed of 174 mph can be unlocked through the available M Driver’s Package.
