Charging your electric vehicle can be done in your own garage, in the parking lot while you’re at work, or even while you’re out grabbing groceries! Public charging stations are growing increasingly common across the United States, especially in urban areas, so it’s easier than ever to stop and charge up when you’re out and about in Ontario.

How to Locate Public Charging Stations

Finding the nearest public charging station is simple in a BMW. Open BMW ConnectedDrive on the in-vehicle display, then select BMW Online. Next, select Charging Stations. You’ll be presented with a list of all the charging stations near your current location – select your preferred location, and the navigation system will take you there! There are also numerous smartphone apps designed to help locate electric vehicle charging stations.

How Long Does Charging an Electric Vehicle Take?

Depending on the size of the battery and the maximum charging output, the time for charging an electric vehicle will vary. In the BMW i3 – a full-electric vehicle – charging to 80% capacity at a public charging station will take about 40 minutes. If you have an at-home Wallbox installed, charging the BMW i3 to 80% capacity takes about 5 hours. You can use the My BMW App to view the charging progress.

How to Charge an Electric BMW at Home

BMW electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are equipped standard with an Occasional Use Cable, which is designed for at-home or emergency charging and is compatible with any standard 120-volt wall socket. This is most ideal for overnight or weekend charging because it takes about 20 hours to get a full charge.

For faster at-home charging, consider having the available BMW i Wallbox installed. This brings your at-home charging up to Level 2 with a 240-volt outlet, installed by a licensed electrician. With the Wallbox, charging the all-electric BMW i3 to 80% takes just 5 hours. BMW plug-in hybrid models, like the X5 xDrive45e SAV®, can be charged in about 7 hours or less.
