1. Decide on a Charging Type (AKA Charging Level)

It’s important to know about the different types of EV chargers. Most home charging systems will fall into Level 1 or Level 2 charging systems. Below is some information about both:

  • Level 1 EV charging often takes days to fully charge an electric car.
  • Level 2 EV charging often takes several hours to fully charge an electric car. You can often get between 60-200 miles of range in just 20-30 minutes with Level 2 DC charging, though. For this reason, most people intermix daytime “top-off” charging with overnight charging.

When you’re looking for a BMW iX home charger or other BMW EV home charging solutions, BMW offers both the Flexible Fast Charger and BMW Wallbox. The Flexible Fast Charger is compatible with nearly any household outlet for on-the-go charging, while the BMW Wallbox can be permanently installed in your home for convenient Level 2 charging.

2. Get Your Garage Ready

The next step is to prepare your Riverside home for an electric vehicle, which means getting your garage cleaned and organized. Clear out any clutter and make sure there’s plenty of room for your vehicle and for a charger to be installed.

3. Find Your Power Panel & Assess Consumption

Your home’s power panel distributes electricity throughout the entire building. This should be rated for a maximum amount of current flow that’s measured in Amperes. Typically, new homes have a 100 Amp power panel, but there should be an amperage rating printed on your home’s main circuit breaker.

Then, get ready to know how much electrical energy you use in your home by doing a self-assessment of the electricity being used before installing your at-home charging system. It’s essential to ensure that you’re not overloading your electric distribution system, so if you need help assessing usage or power needs, talk to a certified electrician.

4. Hire a Qualified Electrician

Once you’re ready to get your home prepared for a BMW i7 or BMW iX home charger, you’ll want to hire a local Ontario electrician. Discuss any concerns you’re having about your power consumption and adding BMW EV home charging to your system. They can install a dedicated 240-volt plug or add a hardwired circuit back to the power panel. This typically costs a couple of hundred dollars, but it could be up to $1,000 or $3,000 if your power panel is not sufficient as-is and requires upgrading.
