When you take a tire number like “P215/65R15 95H”, every letter and number means something different. Let’s break down the different components of this example:

    • P: This stands for “P-Metric tire” or a passenger vehicle tire. You might see “LT” for “light truck” or no letter at all on a Euro-Metric tire.
    • 215: This indicates the tire width in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall, or 215 millimeters in this case.
    • 65: This gives the ratio of the tire height of the tire’s cross-section compared to its width. In this case, the tire’s height is 65% of its width. It tells you how thick the sidewall is.
    • R: This means the tire has a “radial” construction.
    • 15: This means the wheel size from one end to the other, so this is a tire meant for a 15-inch wheel.
    • 95: This is the load index, which tells you how much weight the tire can support. This figure ranges from 75 to 105, and our example tire is 95.
    • H: This is the speed rating, or how fast the tire can safely go, rated from A to Z. A tire with an “H” rating can reach a maximum speed of 130 mph on the Riverside roads.
