How to Check Coolant Level at Home

What is Coolant?

Coolant is often referred to as “antifreeze,” and it refers to a colored liquid that is used by your engine. Though some call it antifreeze, coolant is actually just as important in freezing temperatures as it is in warmer conditions. Coolant stabilizes the temperature inside the engine, which keeps it running smoothly through any forecast or condition.

In addition to knowing what is coolant, it’s useful to know what color is your coolant. Coolant can be blue, green, yellow, or red – depending on your vehicle. This color can also be a good indicator. If your coolant is ever brown or colorless when you check your coolant levels, it’s time for a fluid flush at our service center.

How to Check Coolant Level

While you can always head to Murrieta for an inspection with our talented technicians, learning how to check your coolant level is simple to do at home. Every three to six months, we recommend taking a look under the hood.

1. Make sure your vehicle is parked and that your engine is cool to the touch.
2. Look at the exterior marking on the side of the reservoir. The liquid level should touch the “FULL” line. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to add more coolant.
3. Check the directions on your coolant bottle to see if it is pre-mixed or if it needs to be diluted. Add fluid to the appropriate level.
4. Before you close the hood, check the hoses and look around the radiator for leaks and damage.
5. If everything looks good, close the hood and you’re ready to head back on the Ontario roads.
