You’re out shopping in Corona, but when you get back into your car to head home, the engine won’t turn over and the warning light is illuminated on your dash. What do you do now? There’s no need to panic. BMW of Murrieta is here to provide detailed steps for how to jump start a BMW, so you can be prepared for anything in Murrieta! The process is easier than you might think, but if you need some help along the way, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our service department. Learn how to jump start a car battery, below.

1. Call Up a Friend or Seek the Help of a Nearby Driver

If you have friends or family who live close to where you’re stranded, call them up and see if they can drive over to you. If not, it shouldn’t take long to find a friendly stranger with a working vehicle who’s willing to help you out. Once you’ve found someone to help you jump your car, have them park either grille-to-grille or side-by-side with your vehicle. Make sure both cars are in park with their parking brakes engaged.

2. Prep Your Car and Equipment

Pop the hood of your BMW and take your jumper cables out of the trunk. (Tip: Every Riverside driver should assemble an emergency car kit that includes jumper cables.)

3. Attach Jumper Cables to Both Vehicles

It’s important to attach the jumper cables in the correct order:

  1. Attach one of the red clamps to the positive (POS / +) terminal on the dead vehicle.
  2. Attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal on the working vehicle.
  3. Attach one of the black clamps to the negative (NEG / –) terminal on the working vehicle.
  4. Attach the final black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead vehicle.

4. Charge Your Battery

Once you’ve attached the jumper cables in the proper sequence, have the driver of the working vehicle start their car up. Allow it to run for several minutes so it can give your battery the charge it requires.

5. Try Starting Your BMW

After waiting several minutes to allow the working vehicle to charge your battery, you can attempt to start your BMW. If it fails to start, you can double-check the jumper cables and try again in a few minutes. If it continues to not start after several tries, you may be dealing with a completely dead battery that is no longer capable of receiving a charge. At this point, you’ll want to call up a towing service to bring your vehicle to the nearest BMW service center.

For 24-hour, 365-day support, just call the BMW Roadside Assistance phone number: 800-332-4269. Their friendly representatives are always available to send help directly to your location, answer questions like, “How do you jump start a car?” and more.
